Material compliance and testing for rail vehicles and transport infrastructure
Every material used inside a rail vehicle must be tested and classified before it can be approved for service. The Assessimus network provides EN 45545 fire classification, independent material testing, damage and failure analysis, and battery management systems for rolling stock and transport applications, from initial material selection through to in-service incident investigation.
What compliance looks like in rail and transport
Key challenges
EN 45545 fire approval for every interior material
Seat materials, flooring, wall panels, cables, and structural elements must each be tested and classified to the correct hazard level before market approval. A late-stage material rejection can delay an entire rolling stock program.
Independent test data is required
Rail vehicle manufacturers and operators cannot rely on manufacturer data sheets for fire compliance. Independent accredited test results are required by rail authorities across EU member states.
In-service damage and incident investigation
When components fail or incidents occur in service, an independent technical investigation is needed for regulatory purposes, liability assessment, and to prevent recurrence.
Battery reliability in transport fleets
Commercial and public transport fleets depend on reliable battery performance. Unplanned battery failures cause service disruptions and maintenance cost overruns that proactive health monitoring can prevent.

Frequently asked questions
EN 45545 is the European standard for fire protection on railway vehicles. It requires that all materials used in rolling stock are tested and classified against reaction-to-fire criteria, covering flame spread, heat release, smoke production, and ignitability. Each material is assigned a hazard level (HL1, HL2, or HL3) based on the vehicle type and the material's location within it. Market approval for rail vehicles in EU member states requires documentary evidence of EN 45545 compliance for all applicable materials.
Regulatory authorities and rail operators require that fire classification results are produced by an accredited, independent laboratory with no commercial relationship to the material being tested. This independence ensures that results are defensible in regulatory submissions, procurement processes, and legal proceedings. Manufacturer-provided data does not meet this requirement.
Yes. For new build programs, the Assessimus network supports material approval, pre-compliance review, and EMC equipment needs from early design through to market approval. For in-service programs, the network provides damage analysis, failure investigation, and ongoing material qualification for refurbishment and replacement components, as well as fleet battery management for operators running battery-dependent rolling stock or support vehicles.
